Grace Under Pressure

I’m going to sound old here, but oh well…

Last night scanning YouTube, I settled in for a few minutes watching Rush’s 1984 concert video from their Grace Under Pressure tour. It’s a little bit of nostalgia for me. I remember being a 14 year old kid, listening to the concert on the King Biscuit Flower Hour, a nationally syndicated live concert radio show, dreaming of being there. Next tour, for the Power Windows album, I made it.

Aside from from how sharp Geddy looks, with his Miami Vice jacket, and still futuristic looking Steinberger L2, what struck me as the video started was the concert experience. As the lights go down, and the intro starts, the lighters come out. It reminded me of how hot a Bic can get on your thumb as you hold it aloft. And the guys with Zippo’s and an extra bottle of lighter fluid, and finally those who were all in, sneaking a blow torch into the venue. And of course there’s the aroma, which hasn’t changed much I guess has it?
